How Genes and the Environment Operate to Influence Child...
How Genes and the Environment Operate to Influence Child Development This essay will look firstly at the ideas that have prevailed throughout history, in relation to genes interacting with the environment, and the human developmental implications of this relationship. It will briefly outline the theory of Heritability, Evolution, Genetic Determination, Epigenesis, Developmental Plasticity and a ââ¬Ëtransactionalââ¬â¢ model of development. Secondly the theories of Genetic determination, Epigenesis and Developmental Plasticity will be compared. Physical and psychological characteristics of child development will illuminate the differing viewpoints held by these traditions. Anatomical development, temperament and language will be used asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Darwinââ¬â¢s ideas being assimilated into popular culture while Lamarckââ¬â¢s work languished in obscurity. Darwins theory of Evolution proposed ââ¬Ënatural selectionââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëadaptationââ¬â¢, that an organism could only change as a result of ââ¬Ëmutationââ¬â ¢, a change in the ââ¬Ëgenotypeââ¬â¢ and that mutation had to ââ¬Ëinferââ¬â¢ an advantage in the environment (phenotype) to be selected and therefore passed on. This process according to Darwin occurred below the level of consciousness [Darwin, 1859]. The organism is in essence ââ¬Ëblocked offââ¬â¢ from its experience, leading to Weismanns idea of a ââ¬Ëbarrierââ¬â¢ [Weismann, 1885] and the central view of the genetic paradigm, which is ââ¬Ëreductionisticââ¬â¢. Lamarcks theory alternatively, is of ââ¬Ëtransformationalââ¬â¢ development, which results from the organisms experience of its environment [Lamarck, 1809]. Its prerequisite is that of the organism being ââ¬Ëopenââ¬â¢ to the experiences of its environment. ââ¬ËInteractionââ¬â¢ occurs at the genetic and environmental levels. Hence logically leading to the Epigenetic paradigm, which supports the same holistic, arrangements proposed by Lamarck [Burkhardt, 1977]. Two traditions with developmental implications were influenced as a result of the differing viewpoints of Darwin and Lamarck; they were Genetic Determination and Epigenesis. Genetic Determination sees human development as reaching an ââ¬Ëendpointââ¬â¢; this is in essence ââ¬Ëpreformationalââ¬â¢. The environment is only there to explore where childrenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ënaturalââ¬â¢ abilities lie. The British philosopher John Locke (1632 ââ¬â1704) proposed one of the first theories in the seventeenth century. Locke believed that a child was born with Read MoreNature Vs. Nurture Debate878 Words à |à 4 Pages When one thinks about child development, are personalities and traits produced by genetics or shaped by the environment? Or, is there a relationship between nature and nurture with regards to child development? The debate continues. While some believe ââ¬Å"nature and nurture work together, others believe they are separate and opposing influencesâ⬠(McDevitt, 2010). Nature vs Nurture In regards to the nature vs. nurture debate, ââ¬Å"this debate is a major issue in many social science disciplines and isRead MoreObesity : Obesity And Genetics1267 Words à |à 6 Pagestwenty-five percent children in US are obese or at least overweight. The goal is to gather information to find out if obesity has a gene of its own or if obesity is based on the education and the environment within the society. The reality is that obesity in childhood is a significant issue in people physical and psychological health. Keywords: obesity *genes *environment *childhood Obesity is one of the second leading causes of preventable death in the United States. It is estimated thatRead MoreThe Psychological Characteristics Of Breast Cancer1406 Words à |à 6 Pageslong been known that certain physical characteristics are biologically determined by genetic inheritance. Color of eyes, straight or curly hair, pigmentation of the skin and certain diseases (such as Huntingdonââ¬â¢s chorea) are all a function of the genes we inherit. Other physical characteristics, if not determined, appear to be at least strongly influenced by the genetic make-up of our biological parents. But if the parent and school have a positive behavior on childrenââ¬â¢s eating habit, and also control the time using the technology of children, they can contribute to preventing this situation. First of all, gene affects to any aspects of human, development, physiology, so no except with the obesity (Genes Are Not). My Initial Hypothesis The influence of oneââ¬â¢s environment versus the influence of oneââ¬â¢s parents and home life may not seem to be much of importance to the average individual. Prior to learning more about human psychological development, I too was guilty of not seeing the importance behind the influences effecting an individual. Pain, suffering, and death can be integrated into positive psychology through the idea of what gives us meaning in life. As human beings we are always looking for meanings in our life and how we should live. We want to cultivate what is best within ourselves. As suggested in the readings on death and dying, the authors stated that when people become aware of their mortality, they become freer and even more compassionate (Martin, CampbellRead MoreMental Illnesses Explored : Schizophrenia1450 Words à |à 6 Pagesin addition to dopamine. The term plasticity is commonly defined as ââ¬Å"the quality of being easily shaped or molded.â⬠But when this term is used in the context of neural development, one may refer to this as brain plasticity and/or neuroplasticity, which means that the brain has the ability to change over a lifespan. Changes in oneââ¬â¢s brain can occur by gaining knowledge (ââ¬Å"exercising the mindâ⬠), memorization, stress, genes, hormones, andRead MoreChildren s Role For Optimum Learning And Pro Social Behavior1293 Words à |à 6 Pageswith a childââ¬â¢s interaction with family, siblings, baby sitters, peers, etc. They learn what is socially and culturally acceptable within their environment. This can cause some confusion if the childââ¬â¢s family comes from a different culture than is presented at the childcare facility. In America, there is a ââ¬Ëmelting potââ¬â¢ of cultures and diverseness. A child may find that what may be acceptable at home, may not be acceptable wi thin society in general, and vice versa.
